August 2015 in Review

During the month I didn't feel like we did much, but looking back at the pictures taken - it appears I was wrong. The first week we all had colds, so we didn't do much the first week... and then most friends in the area started school the last week of August, so we just kept to ourselves. However, I think we really had a lovely and enjoyable month. The kids were happy and, really, that's all that matters.

"Not now. Maybe later sweetheart."
Anytime she says "anymore" it means she doesn't want to do something "anymore."
Ex: "Eat chicken anymore." "Take bath anymore."

It's coming out.

Goodbye party for the sharpe Family
We started out the month by attending Harrison's birthday party in addition to a "goodbye" party for the Sharpe family. Lily thoroughly enjoyed this party and, to this day, keeps asking when we can go see Eliza and "Parrison."

Kids Morning Out
Kids Morning Out occurred in Old Salem this month. There wasn't as many activities as previous KMO, but the kids had fun playing with each other and Lily was so happy that Asher was there. After we were all drenched in sweat and ready to call it a morning, we headed over to chick-fil-a to feed our tummies and continue to enjoy spending time with friends and good company.

Doctor Appointments
Lily had a doctor appointment for the first time in six months. Doctor appointments have been pretty traumatic for Lily in the past, but this visit was so pleasant. She was excited and happy to stand on the scale and stand to be measured (although she wouldn't stay flat-footed, she kept on popping up on her tippy-toes so she eventually had to be measured lying down). Since I frequent this office quite a bit, the doctor and I have become good friends.

Going to the zoo - Africa
The following Monday we headed with (our Pediatrician friend) Jude and Eli to go to the zoo. They have annual passes, which makes attending the zoo so much more pleasant because we don't have to rush through everything, feel like we are missing out, or stay too long. The kids were more excited about running alongside each other. Lily wanted to do everything that Jude was doing. She found a new friend and constantly asked when we could see him again.

Going to the zoo - America
So... We went to the zoo again with Eli and Jude, but this time to see the 'America' side. The weather was misty and just perfect. It felt so refreshing, but because it was slightly damp, it kept the crowds away and we felt like we had the zoo all to ourselves. The only downside was that the animals took shelter from the misty rain and we weren't able to see as many animals as we would have had we gone to the Africa side. We decided that the Africa side of the zoo has more animals closer together, but the America side has more exhibits and play areas for kids to spend time goofing around and getting their energy out. Once the sun came out we headed home, but, yet again, Lily was asking - over and over - when we could see Jude again!

Mayberry
Daddy had a few hours at home one weekend so we decided to drive up to Mt. Airy and check out a 'General Store' of where I had recently received a gift certificate. We really had no expectations, nor any idea what we were in for. It was a random mixture of Amish type furniture, random trinkets, sandwiches made to order, and a large selection of bulk item goods prepackaged ready for you to pay for. My gift certificate covered $20 of the $28 we spent there. We felt like that was a success and now know what this quaint shop contains so if anyone is visiting Mayberry Mt. Airy, we can recommend this 'General Store' for them to visit.

Big Toy Day
Daddy had the last Saturday of the month completely off, so we headed south to the Airport in Davidson County (near Lexington) where there was a "big toy" activity for the kids. Every shape and size of vehicle flooded the runway of the airport. There were all sorts of ATV's and off-roading vehicles, any type of tractor or farm equipment, city maintenance vehicles (like dump trucks, fire-trucks, excavators), and planes ranging from one seaters, crop-dusters, and private jets. Plus the vehicles all ranged in different sizes and ages. Some were from WWI and WWII. Some planes looked like Amelia Earhart had just jumped out of the plane and was ready to greet us. Some vehicles looked like they came out of the shop and were made yesterday. It truly was a fantastic assortment of vehicles for kids to look at and play on (the older vehicles were for viewing purposes only). Lily loved it and we decided that when Marco gets a bit older we'll all go up for a family airplane ride! We can't wait for this to come back next year! Apparently, this is how the county raises money for the schools within its borders. Everyone who lives in Davidson county (or outside and just wants to help for fundraising purposes) brings their vehicles for kids to look at and enjoy. It costs about $10/person to enter and see all the vehicles, plus additional fees if you want to take rides, or indulge in sweets or drinks. I think that this is a very clever and ingenious way of raising money for kids for school. I will gladly support this entrepreneurial way of raising money!

First day of Preschool
The highlight of the month was Lily attending her first day of Preschool. We talked it up and tried to make it so special for her. We wanted her to just love preschool and not wait to go back. We got up early that morning and made special Mickey Mouse waffles, let her pick out her own outfit, took pictures, and gave Lily her very own backpack. It was a success! Now, every night when we put Lily to bed we have less of a fight than normal because Lily wants to go to bed so that tomorrow she can see her "preschool teacher." And funny story - when you ask Lily: "Lily what is your preschool teachers name." She looks you straight in the eye and with a very serious face says, "Tren-er-ow-ski." Such a smart girl!

Other:
While we did have a lot of activities worth documenting, I want to remember the small things that occurred as well. In the quiet moments at home, spending time with each other, memories are also made and relationships are strengthened. This month we had extra time to spend with each other and enjoyed together all the new achievements, milestones, or funny things Lily said.

Kids playing with each other
These two are becoming more and more of best friends each day. It warms my heart to watch them play together and interact. I love them and I love watching them love each other.

Spending Time with Daddy
Time with Daddy was rare this month, as August is one of his busy months of the year. Thus, we tried to make time precious with him when he was around. It's hard because Marco has been going to bed around 6:00-6:30 and there are days that go by that Daddy isn't able to see Marco or spend time with him. On this rare occurrence, Michal made it home early, around 6:15, and was able to hold Marco momentarily before I put him to bed. But on the other hand, because Marco sleeps so much - Lily gets a lot of extra special one-on-one time with her Daddy. They are bonding and having more fun than ever before.

Marco growing - seven months +
Marco is growing. And getting stronger and stronger. This month he started crawling and making life a whole lot more interesting for us.

Lily's Lip
In a moment of trying to rush inside to get away from mosquitoes, Lily fell off the porch swing and hurt her lip and face. It produced a lot (A LOT) of blood, tears, and bandaids... but her lip mended rather nicely and she is a happy girl once again.

Scary Story
I have to document this story... The missionaries forgot something at my house and texted to ask if they could swing by to pick it up in about ten minutes. After waiting for a half hour, I could wait no longer to put Marco down for a nap, so I opened the door and left their items just inside our glass door so that they could grab it if they came by and I was indisposed or busy. I was upstairs with Marco for a total of four minutes and when I came downstairs Lily had informed me that someone had come and given her a package. The missionary's items were still in my house and I could see nice wet footprints on my porch. With Lily holding a package in her hands, I knew that whoever came up to my door had to have opened it themselves because Lily doesn't have the strength to open the glass door. This really was an eye opener to me to be careful and how easy it could have been for said intruder (post man/woman) to have snatched my little girl. Life is so short, and sometimes you think that you are being so careful, but really it is to your demise. Missionaries came another 20 minutes later, got their belonging and were on their way and I shut and locked the front door and held Lily a little tighter and longer during her nap that afternoon - grateful that nothing bad had happened in the four minutes I was away and upstairs putting Marco to sleep.
